Rie Tanaka, Aya Hisakawa, Shigeru Chiba Join Yamato 2199 Crew [News via AnimeNewsNetwork]

Rina Satou, Aya Uchida, Keiji Fujiwara also cast in space opera anime remake


The official website for the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 television anime series and film project revealed more cast members on Monday.

Shigeru Chiba as Commander Sakezō Sado
Niigata-born chief medical officer/medic, famous for indulging in sake ("spring water" in the American Star Blazers adaptation) any chance he gets

Keiji Fujiwara as Chief Petty Officer Isamu Enomoto
Aomori-born boatswain and former training officer of Kodai and Shima

Aya Hisakawa as Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi
Kyoto-born information officer skilled in analyzing enemy data, and also a psychology doctorate who counsels her fellow crew members

Rie Tanaka as Ensign Akira Yamamoto
Purser born in Arcadia City on Mars


Rina Satou as Makoto Harada
Akita-born medical officer

Aya Uchida as Warant Officer Yuria Misaki
Yamaguchi-born operations officer trainee who relieves Yuki Mori on the bridge during the third shift
Takayuki Sugo will play Jūzō Okita, the captain of the titular battleship in the original anime. Daisuke Ono will be Susumu Kodai, the main character in the original, while Kenichi Suzumura will play Kodai's best friend Daisuke Shima. Houko Kuwashima will be the heroine Yuki Mori.
Yutaka Izubuchi (RahXephon), the 53-year-old animator who worked on mechanical designs and science-fiction concepts on some of the earlier projects in the franchise, is serving as chief director. Yoshinobu Nishizaki, the late producer of the franchise, is credited with the original story. Nobuteru Yuki (Escaflowne, Record of Lodoss War) is designing the characters, and the anime studios XEBEC and AIC are producing the anime. Mechanical designer Makoto Kobayashi (Giant Robo, Last Exile, Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection) revealed at Anime Expo in July that he is working on a Yamato remake for this year.
The first two episodes in the new television series will have preview screenings in 10 theaters in Japan on April 7.
