2009 film returns with 30+ added minutes, different ending in Tokyo, Osaka in January
The official community website Yamato Crew began streaming a 270-second preview video for the director's cut of the Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection anime film on Tuesday. The preview highlights several scenes from the upcoming film release, including battle clips with the title spaceship.
The 2009 film's new version will have newly added sequences, a different ending from the original version, and a redone soundtrack, in accordance with the late director Yoshinobu Nishizaki's wishes. The new edition also adds at least 30 minutes to the original film and inclludes never-before-seen scenes, re-cut scenes, and new dialogue recordings.
The director's cut will play in two theaters in Tokyo and Osaka from January 28 to February 3. Bandai Visual will then release this extended edition on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on March 23. Bandai Visual had announced that the first Blu-ray Disc and DVD release of Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection would have both endings, but then it delayed that earlier release and did not include both endings last year.
The original 1974 anime (dubbed and partly rewritten in English as Star Blazers) recounted the voyages of the World War II battleship Yamato after it is resurrected in 2199 as a space-faring ship to fend off alien threats to Earth. Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection is set in the year 2220, 17 years after the battleship Yamato went down in the Sea of Aquarius. A rebuilt Yamato rises to save humanity and face an unprecedented threat.
